Prosecutors continue to bring people to the stand in hopes of building a strong enough case against R. Kelly to keep him behind bars. R. Kelly is currently facing charges of racketeering and sex trafficking. The latest person to come and tell their story about R. Kelly is the minister who married him and the late singer Aaliyah.
2021 marks the 20th anniversary of Aaliyah’s death. The star has managed to remain beloved over the years by millions. Unfortunately, fans hoping to spend the 20th anniversary of her death enjoying her music- are instead seeing parts of her past dug up through R. Kelly’s case.
His former tour manager came forward and admitted that everyone in R. Kelly’s camp was very aware that he and the underaged singer were getting a little too close but did nothing to interfere. Eventually, R. Kelly roped his camp into it after believing that he might have gotten Aaliyah pregnant. So the team got to work helping them secure a fake ID and help the pair get married. His tour manager Demetrius Smith bribed a woman in social services to get an ID showing that Aaliyah was 18 years old. This was to ensure that she could not testify against him if things went left.
The two were wed on Aug. 31, 1994, by Nathan Edmond. Edmond is now 73 years old and claims to have not known the two before meeting them. He was not aware of their celebrity status or that they were important in any way. He appeared via video call, and much like Demetrius Smith during his testimony, Edmond was not very interested in taking the stand.
“A friend of Mr. Kelly’s, who was also a friend and associate of mine, asked me to do him a favor,” Edmond remembered. Keith Williams, the friend of R. Kelly’s, knew Edmond because they both worked in real estate.
He recalled the ceremony lasting only 10 minutes with Kelly, Aaliyah, and about four other people present. They wed in a Chicago hotel. He said the pair wore matching sweatsuits with one pant leg rolled up. He could not see Aaliyah’s face because her hair covered it.
